RIDDOR 2013 Injury definitions – Effect on SMIS BI

What is the change?

Injury definitions ad FWI weightings based on the RIDDOR 2013 definitions are available in Jaspersoft

Which Jaspersoft domains will include the new injury categories?

The new injury weightings will be available in one form in any domain that contains injury information. Those that contain the ‘Injury’ folder in the ‘Fields’ will contain basic information around the injuries sustained, those that contain the ‘Casualty’ in the ‘Fields’ folder will contain more detailed information around the specifics of any injury.

The majority of domains contain the ‘Injury’ folder and now contain three fields, as seen below:

All of these fields give a line of information detailing the injured person type followed by the injury degree, separated by a colon.

  • Injuries summary 1995 – gives the injury information in relation to the RIDDOR 1995 definitions.
  • Injuries summary 2013 – gives the injury information in relation to the RIDDOR 2013 definitions.
  • Injuries summary – the original field available in Jaspersoft, gives the injury information in relation to the RIDDOR 1995 definitions. Maintained in order to ensure that existing reports that were based on this field still function as intended.

Some domains contain the ‘Casualty’ folder in the ‘Fields’ section. These fields are for the most part unchanged, with the exception of ‘injury degree’, which now works as follows:

  • Injury degree 1995 – gives the injury degree in relation to the RIDDOR 1995 definitions.
  • Injury degree 2013 – gives the injury degree in relation to the RIDDOR 2013 definitions.
  • Injury degree – the original field available in Jaspersoft, gives the injury degree in relation to the RIDDOR 1995 definitions. Maintained in order to ensure that existing reports that were based on this field still function as intended.

The domains that contain the ‘Casualty’ folder in the ‘Fields’ section will also contain a ‘Casualty’ section in the ‘Measures’ section below. These measures now contain:

All of these fields give a line of information detailing the FWI score associated with that casualty.

  • fwi 1995 – gives the FWI in relation to the RIDDOR 1995 definitions.
  • fwi 2013 – gives the FWI in relation to the RIDDOR 2013 definitions.
  • fwi – the original field available in Jaspersoft, gives the FWI in relation to the RIDDOR 1995 definitions. Maintained in order to ensure that existing reports that were based on this field still function as intended.

Why does this change affect SMIS Business Intelligence (BI)?

Any change made to the fields in Jaspersoft requires careful consideration regarding the effects on SMIS BI. Adding new fields, may change the way you want to return injury information going forwards.

Do I need to update my reports?

The original injury fields (those without the year suffix) have been maintained to ensure that any ad-hoc views/reports built using those original injury fields will continue to work as intended. Any existing reports that use the original injury information will not need to be changed. However you will be able to update or recreate the ad-hoc views/reports to incorporate the RIDDOR 2013 injury information if you wish.

How do I use the new fields in ad-hoc views/reports?

To incorporate the new fields into ad-hoc views in Jaspersoft you simply have to open the relevant folder as detailed above (be that injury or casualty in the fields, or casualty in the measures) and select the new fields. No manual refresh is required for new ad-hoc views created since the change, they will be available to use already.

How do I incorporate the new fields into my existing reports?

To incorporate the new fields into existing reports, the process is slightly different. If the view was created prior to the new fields being made available in Jaspersoft earlier this year, they will not be available in the drop-down lists to use. In order to use this information you will need to build a new version of the report and bring in the new fields that will be available in the drop downs to the left.

If you are unsure how to create a new ad-hoc view/report, please refer to the refresher videos on the SMIS training page of the RSSB website, found here: https://www.rssb.co.uk/safety-and-health/risk-and-safety-intelligence/safety-management-intelligence-system/smis-training

Will it change the way that domains work in Jaspersoft?

No, you will still use the same domains to extract events in Jaspersoft. The new fields have been added to all relevant domains but do not affect any of the other existing fields.

Will it affect my pre-existing reports/dashboards?

No, all pre-existing reports and dashboards that have been set up in Jaspersoft by RSSB or our members will continue to work as they did due to the retention of the original injury fields.

What do I do if I do find it has affected any of my reports/dashboards?

Please contact the industry systems service desk immediately and raise a ticket stating your issue and what resource it is affecting.

The service desk can be found here: Support : RSSB - Industry Systems Service Desk.

Will this change the way that I use Jaspersoft currently?

Any training that you have received in Jaspersoft will still be up to date, the only change to future training courses will be to mention the new RIDDOR definition fields listed in this document. The way that you use Jaspersoft will be unchanged if you do not wish to use the new fields.
